Our church actually owns all the equipment we use on a regular basis except my guitar and our electric guitar players guitar. All amps, drums, keyboards, even the bass are owned by the church.
The downside.. it gets expensive

The upside...I know that if our drummer moves, I just have to find another drummer.. not a drum set too.

Our instrumentalist take care of their individual pieces of equipment.

We made most of our purchases with our current player in mind. I do understand about playing your own instrument though. I have two acoustic guitars and I know exactly what I can do with them. Picking up someone elses instrument, even a "nicer" one is just weird.

What about your vocalist and mics etc? I read an article last week about a band where their vocalists purchased their own microphones and in ear monitors?

I understand that. But it would have been nice to have some back-up stuff for the situation where the student's equipment is out of commission. In terms of caring for church instruments, couldn't that be done by the person who uses them? Thanks for the feedback.

Our band uses their own equipment aside from the PA, mics, etc. We did gather donations from the church and buy a djembe for the youth band, though. I don't think it would be a bad idea for the church/youth group to purchase a drum set, bass guitar, electric, etc. but then you've got to have someone designated to take care of them, change strings, treat them as their own, etc. Then, what if the instrument you have isn't liked by the player? As a guitar player myself, I like mine and feel most comfortable with my own. It's nice, but just different playing someone else's axe.
