Ways Our Church Uses Twitter #1

twitter28
Yes, just last week I put up a post entitled Why Not to Use Twitter, The truth is I think twitter can be a great tool to use for your church. Here is the first of several examples of how we are using twitter.
Our youth director recently set up a twitter account for the youth group. We then embedded the feed into our website using the badges twitter provides. When our group took a trip to St. Louis recently our youth director posted updates and pictures during the trip. Our members were then able to go to the website and follow the youth on their journey.

This had several benefits:
1. Church members could feel like they were connected to the trip.
2. Several members began using twitter and now follow the youth group and the church, and other members, expanding our connections
3. We embedded the twitter feed into our website. This exposed new people to our website, not only to the twitter updates, but to the rest of the site.

Why We’re Not Going All Out For Easter

07easterweb058I remember growing up how Easter Sunday was. It seemed like for that Sunday the church went all out. We had an orchestra, dancers, and big choir anthems. We had a lot of things that only happened on that Sunday. And then the next Sunday was back to “normal.” I have begun to wonder if that is a good thing or not. Is going all out and putting such an emphasis on Easter Sunday theatrics helpful or hurtful for those that come back the next week?
This year in our contemporary service we are not doing any big band numbers. Our stage will not be decorated that much differently than it is normally. Our band and vocals will be the same band and vocals that we have every week. Our worship songs will be ones focused on the resurrection, but the same ones the congregation has been learning and worshiping with for a while. And since we do communion on the 3rd Sunday of every month we are even keeping that the same. Communion on Easter?

So is this a bad thing? Does your church go all out for Easter? Why or Why not?

Why Not to Use Twitter

For the past week I have heard all the advantages of using twitter and facebook in your church. Here is an interesting post from the folks at Church Marketing Sucks with some warnings about this. I agree with them. Here is an excerpt from the closing.
“Your church will never be great because you figure out how to use Facebook and Evites. Your church will be great because you commit yourself to living the gospel in a radical way,”

Experiencing Jesus’ Passion

passionstationThis week we are using Experiencing Jesus Passion Transformation Stations from Group Publishing. I like setting up an experience like this because it gives a different opportunity to worship. There is no bulliten, no songs, no liturgy, no sermon. Just a self guided tour that helps you to reflect on the passion and death of Christ, and what that means for you.
We are running this for an entire week from 5:00-8:00 pm in our youth center.
What other worship experiences do you provide during Holy Week?

Sunday Setlist 4/5/09

sunday-setlistIt was Palm Sunday this week and our service went great. I had several people come up to me and say how good the music sounded . Kudos go to our band, vocals and sound guys for making it all work together.

We started off with one of our new favorites “Today is the Day” I need to make sure and not do it so often I wear it out. After that we had announcements, and the kids headed to the back of the room to get palms. This was a new way of doing this but it worked well. They came down the center aisle as we played Ancient of Days and then they went ahead and did the children’s moment. After that we sang Days of Elijah and Revive us Again. After our prayer time I sang Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) for offering. Then we had a great message and closed with Jesus Paid it All. Then we had a new family join… yeah.
