Why Not to Use Twitter

For the past week I have heard all the advantages of using twitter and facebook in your church. Here is an interesting post from the folks at Church Marketing Sucks with some warnings about this. I agree with them. Here is an excerpt from the closing.
“Your church will never be great because you figure out how to use Facebook and Evites. Your church will be great because you commit yourself to living the gospel in a radical way,”
Thoughts? Comments?

Well, sure. Twitter, evites, etc are just tools — if there’s no substance behind their use, you might as well be talking to an empty room.

Interesting quote. And I’m sure the article has many provocative thoughts.
But how does the use of facebook/twitter/evites conflict with living out the Gospel in a radical way?

I agree with the quote. I think facebook, twitter, and websites are great tools that can be used by churches, but it should be an addition to what you’re doing. The church should always be about accepting, loving, and spreading the word about this guy named Jesus and what he did. I think that there are people that love to be more connected through things like twitter and facebook, but I think that our society is raising a generation that will soon begin to realize they’re starving for real, face-to-face relationships and the church will need to be ready to offer that- that’s the way I interpret “living the gospel in a radical way”….loving people when we don’t know them, and especially when they don’t deserve to be loved.

I agree that Twitter will not make your church great, but does that mean that you shouldn’t use it? I’ve been posting a series of blogs called “Twitterize Your Church,” because I think it can be a great tool to give a louder voice to what churches are saying.

I don’t think twitter, facebook or e-vites conflict with living out the Gospel. I do think that we can get so caught up in all the different ways we can deliver a message, that we begin to focus more on the means, than the message.

I know for me, one of my biggest struggles is finding ways to communicate with people without making 20 phone calls or stuffing envelopes (most snail mail is overlooked as well) every time I need to get something out. Most parents have email but some hardly check it. Others have texting, but not everyone. Some don’t use either one and so the other day I wound up faxing some forms because we were up against a deadline. I think most of the youth and adults in our church are behind the technology curve and so the best thing I can do is meet them where they are at. I do think some of them get so much information over their blackberries and iphones that the stuff I send out gets lost in the shuffle (the way junk mail used to fill up mailboxes 15 years ago). That’s my opposition to all the technology…too much info makes it hard to filter through it all.
