Help Someone Else Adopt – The Lullaby CD Project Part 2

LUllaby CD

I want to give a box of 100 personalized copies of “Hopes Prayers and Lullabies” to any couple wanting to adopt. The CD’s would have their story on the inside and a personalized photo on the cover.

They could sell the CDs for $12 a piece and raise $1200 for their adoption process.

I do not want this to be a burden or a worry, but  a blessing for the adoptive couple, however I cannot fund this project on my own. That leaves me looking for a way to raise the needed funds to make this project a reality. It will cost about $250 to produce 100 personalized CDs.

I need your suggestions on how to get this project off the ground.

5 Posts to Help Your Youth Worship Team

youthband

Our youth band recently led worship for our district camp. One comment I heard several times was how great it was to have youth leading youth in worship. Youth leading youth in worship is one of the things I am most passionate about. I have worked with youth worship bands at three different churches. I have consulted with churches and led workshops on youth led youth worship. I strongly believe that awesome things can happen when adults get out of the way and allow youth to play their hearts out, and be lead worshippers within their group of peers.

Would you like to have a youth worship team as part of your youth group but don’t know where to start? Youth worship is one of the main categories I write about on forkintheroadmusic.org. Here are 5 articles that might be helpful to you?

1. Five Things I Learned When our Youth Band Led a Week of Worship

Our youth worship team got the opportunity to lead 200 of their peers for 5 days at district camp. It was a great experience, and a learning experience for us all. See what we learned.

2. Youth Worship Teams: Be Creative by Not Leading

Right now our youth worship team leads worship almost every week for the youth group. However this wasn’t always the case. There was a time we took almost a year off from leading in any form, to work on things like playing as a group, learning new songs and more.

3. Working with Youth Worship Teams  - An Interview with Jason Huffman

When in ministry, it is always good to have others you can ask for help, bounce off ideas and share your thoughts. Jason Huffman is a youth director with many years experience working with youth bands. He has his own blog http://jasonbhuffman.wordpress.com/ where he writes about a variety of subjects, including youth worship and where you can download his e-book  “Starting a Youth Worship Band from the Ground Up”.

4. Starting a Youth Worship Team in a Small Church

You may want to have a youth worship team but not know where to start. One challenge you face is finding the musicians and singers you need. The key is to start small and work with what you have. This post talks about ways you can get started, and some tips to take you to the next level.

5. Worshipping Without a Band

Sometimes, no matter how hard you look, you will have times where a youth band is just not going to happen. What do you do then? Here are a few ideas on how to have worship services and experiences, when your own youth worship band is not an option.

There are many more posts about youth worship. Click here to see the archive for the Youth Worship category.

Do you have a question about how to start, or work with a youth worship band? Leave it in the comments. I would love to hear from you.

Most Embarrassing Moment of 2012

Embarassed Kitty

This morning we had a combined worship service at 10:30. It was supposed to be in our contemporary worship space, but because of some heating issues we moved it to our sanctuary where our traditional worship service meets.

We decided to keep normal order of worship for the Sanctuary service. This includes a closing benediction song that they always sing, every week.

I got the music, practiced the song and made sure I was ready to play it.

The order of service at the end was supposed to be hymn, pastoral benediction, benediction song, postlude.

I had planned a big loud postlude and was ready.

The pastor gave his blessing

And… I played the postlude, as loud as I could.

It was only after I looked out and saw the congregation standing, with a look of bewilderment did I realize that I had completely skipped over the song they were supposed to be singing.

There was not much to do, but stop, and start the closing song.

2012 is off to a great start.

So how has your 2012 been so far? Let me know in the comments!

Simple Worship Stage Design Ideas

image-4

You may think that designing the background for your worship stage, platform, or venue takes a lot of know how, and a lot of money. Over the past few years we have found neither of those things to be true. We have found that by  shopping and finding some material on sale or for free, creating some of our own weights and ties, and through lots of experimenting, we could come up with some cool, meaningful designs for our worship area.

Here are some photos from the most recent set that my wife put together.

The fabric draping down from the right corner is a heavy, elastic fabric which is held up by cafe clips and nylon rope. At each point there is a black rope going over the top and tied to a weight on the back.

The two pieces of fabric in the front are a spandex type fabric which we found on sale. We tied each corner again using cafe clips, a weight and nylon rope, or heavy fishing line.

We finished it off by placing the lights to where they hit the fabric in different ways.

The most expensive part of course is the colored lights, but a nice effect can be obtained with out them by using some regular spots, or lights.

Our goal is to keep experimenting and trying new things. As we do I’ll try to share what we learn with you.

In the mean time here are some great sites that I have used to find ideas, from people who have been doing this much longer, and are far better than I am. Enjoy.

Youth Worship: Worshipping Without a Band

youthband11

Recently my friend Tim Schmoyer who blogs at Life in Student Ministry received the following email from a youth leader looking for some help. He asks:

“Do you know of any GOOD cd’s or dvd’s for sing-a-long praise and worship music for teens.  We are a small group in rural Missouri.  No praise band but we want to praise God during our meetings.  I’d appreciate any help you have to offer. Thanks a million and God bless.”

Worship music is a very important aspect of any youth ministry I have been involved in. Sometimes we had groups that sang a few songs at the beginning or end of a youth group time, sometimes we had a band that played for a youth worship service or maybe just some guitars around the campfire singing favorite songs. But the question is what do you do when you do not have anyone who can play guitar, or who can lead songs? There are a few options.

Option #1CD/DVD resources- Many different companies now offer worship music on CD and DVD. Two of the main ones I have used before are Iworship and SPIN or Student Praise Interactive Network.

The Iworship DVDs included the songs being performed and video backgrounds with the words displayed.  They even have a new cool product called IWORSHIP Flexx which allows you to easily move between verses, bridges etc. They also include split tracks so you can either worship and sing along with the vocals, or just have the background music play.

Student Praise Interactive Network is another great resource and the one I am more familiar with. SPIN sends you a package of resources in one disc. These include the split tracks for each song, lyrics formatted for Media Shout and Powerpoint, Chord Sheets, Lyric Sheets, and Piano Music. I really like this resource because it provides a great transition if you do find an guitar player, piano player or vocalist who can slowly work into leading worship for you. Since the piano and chord sheets go along with the CD, they can play along, and sing along while they learn and become more comfortable and confident.

Option #2 Find a Service Nearby- Although it does not meet a need for worship every week, on an occasional basis you may be able to take your group to a worship service somewhere else. Maybe there is a church or youth group in your area that does a weekly contemporary worship service. What a great way not only to worship as your own group but to join others in worship, maybe even from a different denomination. Also keep your eyes and ears open for concerts that may be coming to your area. Worship groups like Hillsongs, David Crowder, Chris Tomlin not to mention many others, all tour and offer great worship opportunities for your group to attend.

Option #3 Bring Someone In- Maybe there is someone in your area who leads worship who would be willing to come lead worship for you on a one time or regular basis. There are many beginning worship leaders who are just looking for opportunities to lead and would love to have the opportunity to share in worship with your group. Check with other churches in your area, or your denominational head office to find some names. There are also sites like indie heaven which have a collection of christian artists, and a way for you to search for some in your area.
