5 Posts to Help Your Youth Worship Team

youthband

Our youth band recently led worship for our district camp. One comment I heard several times was how great it was to have youth leading youth in worship. Youth leading youth in worship is one of the things I am most passionate about. I have worked with youth worship bands at three different churches. I have consulted with churches and led workshops on youth led youth worship. I strongly believe that awesome things can happen when adults get out of the way and allow youth to play their hearts out, and be lead worshippers within their group of peers.

Would you like to have a youth worship team as part of your youth group but don’t know where to start? Youth worship is one of the main categories I write about on forkintheroadmusic.org. Here are 5 articles that might be helpful to you?

1. Five Things I Learned When our Youth Band Led a Week of Worship

Our youth worship team got the opportunity to lead 200 of their peers for 5 days at district camp. It was a great experience, and a learning experience for us all. See what we learned.

2. Youth Worship Teams: Be Creative by Not Leading

Right now our youth worship team leads worship almost every week for the youth group. However this wasn’t always the case. There was a time we took almost a year off from leading in any form, to work on things like playing as a group, learning new songs and more.

3. Working with Youth Worship Teams  - An Interview with Jason Huffman

When in ministry, it is always good to have others you can ask for help, bounce off ideas and share your thoughts. Jason Huffman is a youth director with many years experience working with youth bands. He has his own blog http://jasonbhuffman.wordpress.com/ where he writes about a variety of subjects, including youth worship and where you can download his e-book  “Starting a Youth Worship Band from the Ground Up”.

4. Starting a Youth Worship Team in a Small Church

You may want to have a youth worship team but not know where to start. One challenge you face is finding the musicians and singers you need. The key is to start small and work with what you have. This post talks about ways you can get started, and some tips to take you to the next level.

5. Worshipping Without a Band

Sometimes, no matter how hard you look, you will have times where a youth band is just not going to happen. What do you do then? Here are a few ideas on how to have worship services and experiences, when your own youth worship band is not an option.

There are many more posts about youth worship. Click here to see the archive for the Youth Worship category.

Do you have a question about how to start, or work with a youth worship band? Leave it in the comments. I would love to hear from you.

Most Embarrassing Moment of 2012

Embarassed Kitty

This morning we had a combined worship service at 10:30. It was supposed to be in our contemporary worship space, but because of some heating issues we moved it to our sanctuary where our traditional worship service meets.

We decided to keep normal order of worship for the Sanctuary service. This includes a closing benediction song that they always sing, every week.

I got the music, practiced the song and made sure I was ready to play it.

The order of service at the end was supposed to be hymn, pastoral benediction, benediction song, postlude.

I had planned a big loud postlude and was ready.

The pastor gave his blessing

And… I played the postlude, as loud as I could.

It was only after I looked out and saw the congregation standing, with a look of bewilderment did I realize that I had completely skipped over the song they were supposed to be singing.

There was not much to do, but stop, and start the closing song.

2012 is off to a great start.

So how has your 2012 been so far? Let me know in the comments!

Why I Wrote “Awaken our Hearts” and Why I’m Giving You the Chord Chart for Free

awaken our hearts

Since it’s introduction I have been amazed and humbled at the response I have had to the song, “Awaken our Hearts.”  I wrote it at a Jr. High Big House work camp, and have used it when leading worship for church camps, retreats and worship services for many years.

It was written because, like a lot of my songs,  I needed to hear the words. It was also written because I felt that it was something the church needed to hear. It is really just a simple prayer.. a request and a confession…

“Awaken the hearts of your people, send a revival into this place

Stir up the depths of our longing, we come before you seeking your face”

For we have forgotten the taste of your glory, forgotten your voice

Your beauty is hidden, our eyes cannot see you, ears cannot hear through the noise

Awaken our hearts”

The confession is that we have sometimes forgotten, with all the other noises and signs and lights, what God’s voice sounds like, and what his beauty looks like. It’s not intentional, we didn’t mean to forget, but I have to admit at least for myself that there are times when I get so caught up in everything around me that I forget to stop and listen, and remember.

The prayer is that God will awaken our hearts, remind us what his voice sounds like, and continue to show us His beauty, even when we are too busy to see. That maybe, just maybe we will slow down, close our eyes to distractions, take the earbuds out of our ears and just be still. Then we will be reminded of His voice, learn to listen to it and follow it once more.

That’s why I wrote this song. It’s a reminder to me and to those who hear it.

That’s also why I want you to use it in your church, or with your youth group, or for your own worship times. You can use it for whatever live worship setting you like. I would love to hear how it is received and how it goes. If you have any questions about the song, how I play it or need help in any way, just contact me.

Here are two different charts.

The Bb chart is in the original key on all of the recordings.

The G chart is what I use to play the song. Capo up 3 frets and it will sound in Bb.

Don’t forget to go vote for “Awaken Our Hearts” on the Indie Heaven 2011 Indiesong contest. Each vote helps me get closer to a chance to professionally record “Awaken our Hearts” and win $500 and other prizes. Just go to www.indieheaven.com/indiesong

“God Undefeatable” Ross King’s New CD

GodUndefeatable-booklet_Page_1

I would definitely list Ross King as a great influence on me becoming a worship leader and my worship leading style. I remember a friend gave me a copy of the Breakaway CD from A&M with Ross King leading worship. Before I knew Paul Baloche, I was learning Ross King’s version of “Open the Eyes of My Heart”, before I heard Sonic Flood rock out “In the Secret” I was strumming along with the acoustic version from Ross King. If I was leading worship somewhere, you could bet the majority of my song list was coming straight out of the “Many Walks One Road” songbook from Ross at Breakaway Ministries.

His acoustic guitar led, simple band accompaniment worship style is an influence on my worship leading style even through today. His original worship songs, with singable melodies, scriptural Christ focused lyrics and choruses that you could sing over and over again have too become a part of mine, and many others worship soundtrack.

So when I got a message on twitter from Ross saying to go buy his new CD, I thought I would check it out. This 5 song EP includes original songs, and hymn arrangements. He has come back to writing more corporate worship songs with that same simple accompaniment and worshipful lyrics I have always enjoyed about his music.

So now I too am encouraging you to go check out Ross King’s latest Ep- “God Undefeatable” from iTunes or buy the physical CD from his website

An Interactive Prayer Time

prayer

For the past several years we have been doing a time of prayer in our worship service where congregation members would call out those who were in need of prayer. It had always seemed to work well. We would usually have 5-10 names lifted up by members, and after each one we would respond with “Lord hear our Prayer” then the leader closed by leading us in the Lord’s Prayer.

I recently had a meeting with one of our ushers. During the course of the conversation we began talking about the service. He said, “You know I’ve been here for 4 years now, and I have yet to hear one of the prayer concerns.” Wow! I had never thought of it. It made me wonder how many others had the same experience. Were people really hearing, and praying for the concerns lifted up?

It wasn’t that he didn’t want to pray for them, it was just that with everyone facing forward, and with the size of the congregation, a concern lifted up was only being heard by those surrounding that person.

In a completely different conversation I was talking with one of our speakers about ways to do things differently in the service. One thing we were discussing was that sometimes people are reluctant to call out a prayer concern because they do not like speaking in front of others, or think their prayer concern is not important enough to mention.

After listening to both of these we brainstormed on ways we could make our prayer time more effective and meaningful. We came up with a simple solution.

As people walked in we handed them an index card. We set out markers in the chairs. During the greeting time we told our members we were going to do something a little different. We wanted them to write down their prayer concerns that they wanted us to lift up. We also asked them to notate if they wanted their concern added to the church prayer list. We invited them to place them in a basket, located in the middle of the room, at anytime during our worship set.

While we played the next two songs, many people brought their cards to the basket, then quietly returned to their seats. After our worship set is the Children’s message. During that time our prayer leaders collected the concerns and read through them. They were able to bunch alike prayers together, they also could edit them for privacy concerns etc…

When it came time for the prayer they started out by opening in prayer, and then two people read off the concerns. Sometimes they would group 2-3 names together and then the congregation would respond with “Lord hear our prayer.”

Where before we would have 5-10 concerns lifted up, we had over 35 concerns mentioned and prayed for.

Though we may not do it this way every week, we definitely will be using this again in the future. Here’s why:

1. All prayer concerns were read into a microphone and heard by all of the congregation.

2. People felt more free to share their concerns anonymously.

3. We have a written list of things people are in need of prayer for.

4. It added an interactive element to the prayer time.

How do you do  prayer time in your service?

Three “Leading Youth Worship” Guest Posts

youthband11

A few years ago I was asked to contribute guest posts to The Worship Community blog. Though I have not posted as often as I would like, I have submitted several articles on leading youth worship teams. Check out the following…

Create a Sustainable Youth Worship Team – One of the greatest challenges I face working with the youth band at our church is having a consistent team from year to year. Find out how…

Engaging Youth in Worship: Give Them Ownership -It is scary to take something as important as worship and turn it over to someone other than yourself, especially a youth. But it could be the best thing you could do, for your youth group and for those individuals. Here area few reasons why.

Engaging Youth in Worship: Opportunities to Respond: We often think of worship as a one way communication. The pastor, worship leader, and song leader speak or sing… we listen or sing along. We need to find ways to help youth be engaged in the worship service, here’s one way.

Follow Friday-Friends

ducks follow

I love the idea of the Follow Friday on Twitter. If you don’t know, twitter users will post a list of people they follow that you might find interesting, and then include the #FF or #followfriday hashtag. The problem is that I generally do not end up following any of them, because to me they are just a twitter username. So I thought I would expand on the idea a little and share with you some of my favorite twitter users and blog authors, and tell you why I follow them, and why you should to.

@jasonbhuffman - Two things I have in common with Jason are music and baseball. He’s a Ranger’s fan and I love my ‘Stros. We also love working with youth and helping them to use their gifts to lead worship. In fact Jason wrote a book about it. Check out his blog  http://www.jasonbhuffman.wordpress.com

@russbo - I met Russ when we worked together at my church. He loves youth, disc golf and duke basketball. He is a great guy and a good friend. He blogs over at http://www.russbowlin.blogspot.com.. check it out.

@expatminister - Josh Hale is one of the most active twitter users I know, and is always sharing links and thoughts about what’s going on in the methodist church, world, and Astros baseball. He share’s his thoughts on his blog http://expatminister.org.

I hope you’ll go check out these guys blogs and follow them on twitter also. Then leave me a link, let me know who I should be following.. and why.
